Bayern enter midfielder race

Last Updated: Wed, 15 Jan 2014 07:24

Arsenal face a battle to land Schalke midfielder Julian Draxler after reports claimed Bayern Munich have entered the race.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is keen to land the talented German international during the January transfer window and could pay as much as £35million to land his signature.

However European champions Bayern have been alerted to the news Arsenal are closing in on the player and they could try and hijack the deal before it goes through.

Arsenal could still be favourites to do a deal as Bayern have a wealth of talent in his position and the 20-year-old could find his path to the first team blocked by the likes of Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben, Thomas Muller, Mario Goetze and Thiago Alcantara.

Draxler is known to play just behind a lone striker, but Wenger would consider playing him up top alongside Olivier Giroud if a deal can be done.
