Defender exit on cards

Arsenal central defender Per Mertesacker will not play for the club again, according to weekend reports.

The £10m deadline day summer signing is out of the side with an ankle injury and is unlikely to play again this season due to the problem.

Reports claim he will be sold in the summer as the Gunners have been linked with a swoop for Ajax's Jan Vertonghen, who plays alongside Arsenal's Thomas Vermaelen for Belgium and who was his defensive partner in Amsterdam.

Mertesacker is unlikely to be the only exit from the Gunners this summer as boss Arsene Wenger admits striker Marouane Chamakh could leave after a disappointing campaign.
