Defender worry for Gunners

Arsenal have concerns over the fitness of Thomas Vermaelen, who is undergoing injections on his ankle to avoid surgery.

The Gunners defender was forced to miss the 1-0 victory against Stoke at the weekend with the problem and Arsene Wenger is likely to leave him out of the FA Cup clash with Blackburn this weekend as well.

Wenger has a number of problems at the back and he is desperate for Vermaelen to hang on until the end of the season before undergoing an operation to sort the problem once and for all.

Vermaelen has had an anti-inflammatory injection for the second time this season and he now faces a battle to be fit for the Champions League double-header against Bayern Munich.

Laurent Koscielny has a calf injury but thankfully it is not a serious one but with Kieran Gibbs out for a few weeks and Carl Jenkinson facing a suspension after being sent off at the Stadium of Light, Wenger is light on numbers at the back and can ill afford any more problems.
