Arsenal and Liverpool are set to battle it out for the signature of Saint-Etienne goalkeeper Stephane Ruffier, reports have claimed.

Both clubs are on the look out for a new goalkeeper when the transfer window opens again this summer and according to the French press, the highly-rated Ruffier is a target.

The 26-year-old has impressed in France this season as Saint-Etienne are pushing for Champions League qualification and the scouts are flocking to watch him in action.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger wants quality cover for current number one Wojciech Szczesny, while his Liverpool counterpart Brendan Rodgers needs to replace Pepe Reina, who looks set to leave Anfield in the summer.

Much will depend on whether Saint-Etienne qualify for the Champions League and he could decide to stay if they do as both Arsenal and Liverpool may not be in the competition next season.
