Arsenal are being linked with a shock £10million swoop for Liverpool winger Stewart Downing.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger was pipped by Liverpool to the signing of Downing when he left Aston Villa last year but he has struggled for form at Anfield and it is thought Brendan Rodgers will look to cash in.

There had been suggestions Downing could return to former club Middlesbrough on loan but he would no doubt jump at the chance to get his career back on track at the Emirates.

Wenger believes he can get the best out of Downing and could make a move as doubts continue to surround the future of Theo Walcott, who has yet to pen a new deal.
