Arsenal are reported to be in the hunt to sign Real Madrid striker Ruud van Nistelrooy but could lose out to Liverpool.
The Dutchman has returned to full fitness but is struggling for first-team action in Madrid and is concerned that it could hamper his chances of going to the World Cup.
The 33-year-old is now weighing up his options ahead of the January transfer window and the Gunners along with Liverpool and Tottenham have all been linked.
Reports in the press claim that Liverpool would be favourites to land him but van Nistelrooy may feel he has more chance of winning silverware with the Gunners and could favour the Emirates Stadium.
Although the ex-Man Utd striker, who was at the centre of a bust-up with Arsenal's Martin Keown and Patrick Vieira in 2005, is not an obvious Arsene Wenger signing, the Gunners boss did sign the veteran Croatia striker Davor Suker and may be short of an out-and-out penalty box striker right now.
