Gunners step up Capoue bid

Arsenal will step up their attempts to land Toulouse midfielder Etienne Capoue after missing out on the player in January.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is keen to add a defensive midfielder to replace Alex Song, who left for Barcelona last summer, and Capoue is said to be on his list of targets.

Arsenal are reported to have failed with a later bid for the 24-year-old just before the transfer window closes but Wenger could resurrect his interest in the summer.

Capoue can also play in central defence and his versatility appeals to Wenger as he also wants more cover at the back with the likes of Johan Djourou and Sebastien Squillaci tipped to move on at the end of the season.

It could take a fee in the region of £10million to land Capoue, who is also attracting plenty of interest from other clubs, and with Arsenal facing a battle to make the Champions League places this season they could struggle to pull off a deal.

Lyon midfielder Maxime Gonalons is also on Wenger's wanted list as he plans a big spending spree in the close season.
