Arsenal have swooped on Malaga in a beat-the-transfer-deadline bid for Spanish left-back Nacho Monreal for a fee of around £8.5million.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger looked set to let the January window pass without making any additions to his current squad.
However, a thigh injury picked up by full-back Kieran Gibbs in Wednesday's 2-2 draw against Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium prompted the French tactician into action on Thursday.
He looks to have wrapped up a deal which will see 26-year-old Monreal move to north London ahead of the 11pm deadline.
The Spain international, who has started 14 of Malaga's 21 games in La Liga this season, had been preparing for a move to the Premier League as he has been learning the language.
However, despite being unable to play in the Champions League last-16 for the Gunners because of his involvement with Malaga this season, Monreal will move earlier than planned and links up with former team-mate Santi Cazorla, who made the same move last August.
