Arsenal are hoping to pip Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund to the signature of German under-21 star Sebastian Rode.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is determined to add some steel to his midfield at the end of the season and has identified the 22-year-old as his top transfer target.
Rode is due to fall out of contract with Eintracht Frankfurt in June 2014 and there is no sign of him penning a new one, which could leave the door open for the Gunners to swoop.
Wenger faces strong competition from the German duo but Rode is said to be keen on a move to the Premier League and that could swing things in Arsenal's favour.
A fee in the region of £7.5million would be enough to secure a deal and that should not be a problem for Wenger, who has been promised significant funds to strengthen his squad in the summer.
