Arsenal are sweating over the fitness of Jack Wilshere who took a whack to his knee during the 1-0 win at Sunderland on Saturday.

Wilshere had to be replaced by Abou Diaby 50 minutes into the game after being on the receiving end of a heavy tackle and that sparked immediate fears he could be set for a spell on the sidelines.

The full extent of the damage has yet to be revealed but Wenger hinted after the game it is not that serious and he could be fit for next weekend's FA Cup clash with Blackburn.

However Wenger was unhappy with the treatment Wilshere received and has called on the referees to give him more protection.

When asked if he was happy with some of the tackles that were going in, Wenger said: "No, I wasn't, especially on Jack. I was a bit frustrated because I thought many times, Jack didn't get the free-kick he deserved.

"The referee let two or three things go that I thought were fouls on Jack. I want just the referee to give a foul when it's a foul. I don't want any special protection.

"The referee is not a bodyguard, he is just a referee and you want him just to give a foul when it's a foul."
