Midfielder rules out Gunners move

Last Updated: Thu, 08 May 2014 06:22

Lars Bender says he is not ready to join a club like Arsenal just yet and says he will remain with Bayer Leverkusen for now.

Gunners manager Arsene Wenger has been keeping tabs on the midfielder as he considers making a move for him in the summer, but it looks as though any bid is doomed.

Bender is valued in the region of £20million by the Bundesliga outfit after recently signing a new deal which ties him down until 2019.

However, the 25-year-old believes it is not the right time for him to move on as he feels he needs more time to improve before taking on extra responsibility elsewhere.

Bender said: "I signed my new contract until 2019, and that should have told everyone how happy I am at Leverkusen.

"I feel settled here and see no reason to change anything.

"In fact, if I am to be completely honest, I haven't had a brilliant season and don't feel ready yet to take on a pivotal role at a big club somewhere else."

Wenger will now have to switch to other targets as he looks to bolster his midfield.
