Toon enter striker race

Newcastle have joined Arsenal in the race to sign Nuremberg striker Josip Drmic this summer, reports have claimed.

The Gunners are said to be showing a very keen interest in the 21-year-old, who has scored an impressive 16 goals from 30 appearances in the Bundesliga this season, but they now face competition for his signature.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has made signing at least one new striker his top priority this summer and Drmic has now emerged as a possible target.

Pardew's need for a new striker intensified at the weekend after Papiss Cisse suffered a fractured knee-cap, meaning they may not have one fit experienced striker come the summer.

Shola Ameobi is heading for the exit door once his contract is up, while loan stars Luuk De Jong and Loic Remy will not be staying on at St James' Park for one reason or another.

Arsenal remain favourites to sign Drmic, but Newcastle are an alternative for the striker, who may want guarantees over playing regular first-team football.
