Wenger eyes Draxler alternatives

Last Updated: Tue, 28 Jan 2014 04:05

Arsenal are targeting Lyon's Yoann Gourcuff and Benfica forward Rodrigo should they fail in their pursuit of Julian Draxler.

Schalke officials have again dismissed all suggestions that the Gunners have made a bid for Draxler, and even if they did, it is thought the Bundesliga side would not consider selling in this window.

A £30million deal for the German forward could be on the cards in the summer, meaning Wenger will have to look elsewhere if he wishes to bolster his forward line before Friday.

Gourcuff has emerged as one possible deal, particularly as Lyon are known to have one or two financial difficulties and would be forced to cash in if Arsenal matched their valuation.

The 27-year-old is back in form for Lyon this season and could be the perfect partner for fellow countryman Olivier Giroud.

Meanwhile, Rodrigo also continues to be linked with a move after another impressive campaign with Benfica that has seen him notch seven goals already this season.

The 22-year-old is under contract with the Portuguese side until 2019 and will not come cheap should Arsene Wenger attempt to pursue a deal over the coming days.
