Wenger targets £20m German

Arsene Wenger is reported to have put Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Lars Bender at the top of his wanted list this summer.

The Arsenal boss is planning a bumper spending spree over the close season after seeing his side's title challenge falter dramatically in the last month and midfield is an area that needs attention.

Wenger believes his side is lacking a midfield enforcer who can boss the centre of the park and has identified Bender as the player he would like to bring in.

The Gunners have plenty of options in midfield with Jack Wilshere, Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey, but the trio lack physical presence and Bender would bring that to the side.

Wenger also needs a replacement for Mikel Arteta, who is heading for the Gunners exit door, but it will take a fee in the region of £20million to convince Leverkusen to sell.
