Wenger targets Italian international

Arsene Wenger is set to switch his keeper targets from Mark Swarzer at Fulham to Italian international Federico Marchetti.

The Gunners have had one bid of £2m for Schwarzer turned down already for the 37-year-old with Fulham holding out for more but that may not be forthcoming now that Marchetti has become available.

Cagliari have put him up for sale but the keeper, who replaced the injured Gianluigi Buffon in Italy's opening World Cup match and then kept the shirt, believes they have priced him out of a move to Sampdoria, who have had an offer turned down.

That leaves the door open for Arsenal who are looking for a new number one after losing patience with Manuel Almunia and Cagliari president Massimo Cellino has admitted he is prepared to sell.

He said: "I understand Federico doesn't want to stay with us.

"I would have preferred it if he had told me and not gone to the newspapers, but there aren't any offers for him and there is full confidence in (reserve goalkeeper) Michael Agazzi.

"The only real club that is pushing for his signature is Arsenal."
