Ipswich boss Jim Magilton has admitted he failed in a bid to sign former Town striker Darren Bent on loan from Tottenham.

The £16.5m striker has largely failed to live up to the massive fee Spurs paid Charlton for him in the summer and is behind Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov.

However, Spurs boss Juande Ramos did not want to lose the England international and declined Magilton's request.

"Darren was having a tricky spell at Spurs and we made a cheeky enquiry," Magilton told the club's website.

"We want to bring in players that will raise the bar and Darren would obviously do that but he's very much in the fold at Tottenham and it's not going to happen. We just asked the question."

Bent is the second England striker Town have failed to take on loan after David Nugent snubbed a similar request.
