O'Neill lines up keeper swoop

Martin O'Neill is reportedly set to offer Spurs keeper Paul Robinson the chance to resurrect his career at Aston Villa in the summer.

The Villa chief is already plotting to bolster his squad for next season with Sheffield United striker James Beattie and Valencia full-back Miguel already linked with a move to the club this week. And it appears that O'Neill will look to add to his goalkeeper department with a swoop for England international Robinson, who has endured a difficult campaign at Tottenham.

The former Leeds player's early season form resulted in him losing his place in the side when Juande Ramos took command at White Hart Lane, while he also lost the England number one jersey to veteran custodian David James. Robinson has since returned to the first XI at Spurs but could be on his way out of the club in a major squad overhaul by the north Londoners.

Villa's summer need for a new shot-stopper has come about because current number one Scott Carson is set to return to Liverpool when his season-long loan expires as it seems O'Neill will not stump up the £10million asking price to make the deal permanent.

Villa had been linked with American keeper Brad Guzan, but that move looks doomed to failure because he will struggle to get a work permit in time for next season.
