Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia is set to sign a new deal at Anfield to finally kill speculation linking him with Newcastle and Fulham.

The Finnish veteran, 34, is coming to the end of his Premier League career but Reds boss Rafa Benitez is confident Hyypia will re-sign for 12 more months.

He said: "Rick Parry [chief executive] is due to talk to Sami's agent this weekend, and we hope everything will then be finished."

Fulham have been linked with Hyypia for almost a year although nothing ever materialised while Newcastle look set to bolster their defence in the summer.

However, the Cottagers and the Magpies will have to turn their attention elsewhere with Hyypia set for his tenth season with Liverpool next term.
