Defending champion John Higgins is out of the World Championships after a 13-9 defeat to Welshman Ryan Day at the Crucible.

The players were locked together at eight frames each overnight but the Scot won just one on Saturday as Day raced to book his place in the quarter-finals.

Day won the first three frames of the day before Higgins hit back to make it 11-9 but there was to be no further success for the two-time champion and his reign at Sheffield is now over.

Higgins looked frustrated and nervous and he was booed by the crowd after punching the table following an indifferent bounce off the cushion in the second session.

In contrast Day, who has never reached the last eight of the World Championships, looked at ease and even had the chance of a 147 break in the final frame of the match, before a red rattled in the jaws of the pocket to end the bid.

He will meet either Stephen Hendry or Ding Junhui in the next round.
