Kimi Raikkonen will be on pole for the Spanish Grand Prix after pipping Fernando Alonso right at the death in qualifying.

Alonso sat on provisional pole in his Renault after the clock had counted down to zero but then had to settle for second place as world champion Raikkonen, the only man on the track behind him, snatched pole on his final lap.

Raikkonen will become the fourth different driver in four races this season to sit on pole in a season that could rival 2007 for excitement towards the business end of proceedings.

Felipe Massa and the BMW Sauber of Robert Kubica occupy the second row of the grid with British star Lewis Hamilton fifth, his worst position of the season.

Hamilton's McLaren team-mate Heikki Kovalainen is behind him in sixth, with the Red Bull of Mark Webber seventh and Jarno Trulli eighth in his Toyota.

BMW Sauber's Nick Heidfeld is ninth, Renault's Nelson Piquet completing the top 10.

Raikkonen was delighted to be on pole and is happy with the way his car has been handling at the Circuit de Catalunya.

"It is a nice feeling," he said. "We have been trying to get it, but always doing mistakes. We have not really been able to do it, but now we are happy.

"Actually, I have been more happy with the car in previous races. But we changed the set-up quite a bit and it seemed to work well."
