Australia have included new caps Billy Slater, Carl Webb and Paul Gallen in their side to face New Zealand next month.

Slater is full-back for the Melbourne Storm while prop Webb and second-rower Gallen have both impressed for North Queensland Cowboys and Cronulla Sharks respectively.

Elsewhere, the experienced Darren Lockyer will captain the side despite only just returning to action following a long-term knee problem. Lockyer and North Queensland's Jonathan Thurston will be the half-back partnership.

The biggest surprise is the absence of second rower Nathan Hindmarsh, who despite 15 caps to his name, has not even been named among the replacements.

Australia team: B Slater (Melbourne); G Inglis (Melbourne), M Gasnier (St George Illawarra), J Hodges (Brisbane), I Folau (Melbourne); D Lockyer (Brisbane, capt), J Thurston (North Queensland); B Kite (Manly), C Smith (Melbourne), P Civoniceva (Penrith), R Hoffman (Melbourne), P Gallen (Cronulla), G Bird (Cronulla).

Interchange: C Webb (Brisbane), A Tupou (Sydney Roosters), W Mason (Sydney Roosters), K Gidley (Newcastle).
