Scholes the hero as Fergie eyes Reds finale

Sir Alex Ferguson hailed Paul Scholes for firing Man United into the Champions League final and hopes Liverpool are their opponents.

The Red Devils boss was delighted after his side defeated Barcelona 1-0 at Old Trafford in their semi-final second leg on Tuesday to reach their first European final since 1999 when they lifted the trophy against Bayern Munich.

Ferguson is now waiting to see who United will face in the all-English final as Liverpool travel to Chelsea on Wednesday with the score level at 1-1 from the first leg. And, while the Blues are favourites, Fergie is hoping the Reds progress if anything because he fears Chelsea's Russian owner Roman Abramovich could ensure his side get more tickets given that the final is being held at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow on May 21.

He said: "Maybe we will get more tickets against Liverpool because Roman Abramovich seems to have bought them all up.

"It would be a nice final against Liverpool but I really don't care."

Ferguson also paid tribute to veteran midfielder Scholes, who looked like he had missed the chance to competing for the Champions League trophy after being suspended for the victory nine years ago. His first half strike was enough to get United through and he will be available for the final.

"It is great for Paul to be in the final," added Ferguson. "It was a fantastic goal.

"I don't think you can expect him to score 10 or 15 goals a season like he used to but when he gets one like that it makes up for the ones he can't score."
