Mark Hughes has told Benni McCarthy to be patient and to continue to work hard to get back into the Blackburn first-team.

The South African frontman has seen his path blocked in recent weeks due to the excellent form of Roque Santa Cruz and Jason Roberts, with his last start coming in the 1-1 home draw against Fulham on March 8.

Hughes insists McCarthy, who recently signed a three-year contract extension, will now have to bide his time before winning his place back although he knows the former Porto man will make an impact when called upon.

The Rovers boss told the Lancashire Telegraph: "Players want to play week in, week out but he understands the impact Jason (Roberts) has made in recent weeks.

"Jason had to be very patient and wait for his chance and, in fairness, he's got an opportunity and taken it.

"Benni understands that and that happens in football so he hasn't got a problem with that.

"Jason has been patient so Benni will have to be, but we all know the quality he has on offer and can produce, so I have no issue there at all."
