Rafa Benitez will now turn his attention to his summer squad strengthening after missing out on any silverware this season.
The exit from the Champions League effectively ends the Reds' season, but after a meeting with co-owner Tom Hicks following the Chelsea match Benitez claims he will now concentrate on pushing the club forward.
The Reds boss will be hoping that Hicks wins his power struggle in the boardroom so he can concentrate on his summer transfer plans and he is confident of making significant progress after meeting the American following the defeat on Wednesday.
"He (Hicks) said 'good job, good effort but you were unlucky'," Benitez revealed. "So it was really positive. There is a lot of confidence that we can make progress and now we have to think about the future.
"We need to keep working, improve the squad and try to be closer for next season. Sometimes one player can make a really big difference like Torres, sometimes you need three or four players. You never know."
