Everton are in a race with Tottenham to try and secure the services of German international centre-half Alexander Madlung.

According to reports in Germany both Spurs and Everton have had the player watched of late and they have been joined by a third, as yet unnamed, Premiership club.

The 25-year-old currently plays for Wolfsburg but he has just a year remaining on his current contract and is apparently unlikely to be offered a new deal by their coach Felix Magath.

Madlung has a clause in his current contract which allows him to leave for a knockdown fee of £2.3m and that makes him a very attractive proposition for all interested parties, but Everton will need to be in Europe if they are to lure him to Goodison Park.
