Wigan owner Dave Whelan has told Dr Thaksin Shinawatra he would be a fool to sack Man City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson.

The former England coach's pre-match press briefing was cancelled on Friday ahead of the clash with Liverpool amid intense speculation over the Swede's future.

But Whelan has told Shinawatra to stick with Eriksson because his removal might trigger a fans' revolt at Eastlands.

"They clearly want Sven to stay and the fans' view is normally the right one - the City owner should realise this," Whelan told the MEN.

"I certainly wouldn't be sacking Sven, there is no logic in sacking a manager who has just given City their best season for ages. If Sven is sacked, it's wrong and he can feel badly done to - he's done a terrific job in my view."
