Ronnie O'Sullivan won all eight frames of a one-sided second session to take a 12-4 lead over Stephen Hendry in Sheffield.
O'Sullivan could clinch the World Championship semi-final on Friday night when he needs only five more frames to inflict a humbling defeat on the Scotsman.
Hendry missed numerous chances early on after they resumed at 4-4, but O'Sullivan was in irresistible form, making breaks of 93, 57, 87, 133, 135, 85 and 70 to inflict a first ever Crucible session whitewash on the seven-time world champion.
The situation will bring back uncomfortable memories for Hendry, who lost 17-4 to O'Sullivan at the same stage of the tournament in 2004.
The 32-year-old from Essex, who made a 147 break against Mark Williams earlier this week, looked back to his fluent best as he switched from playing right-handed to left-handed at will.
