Bolton Wanderers beat Sunderland 2-0 at the Reebok Stadium to ensure their survival in the Premier League for next season.
The Wanderers started the brighter of the two teams with some purposeful attacking play.
They had to wait until the 43rd minute before El Hadji Diouf opened the scoring with a crisp right-footed half-volley into the top corner of the Sunderland goal.
Sunderland replied well, starting the second half with more tenacity than they showed in the first half.
Roy Keane made a triple substitution on the hour the mark to try and swing the game in the Black Cats favour and it nearly worked as they came into the game more.
On 83 minutes though Bolton sealed it when Daryl Murphy headed past his own 'keeper to give the Wanderers a two goal lead.
The Reebok was rocking as Bolton entered the last 5 minutes and they emerged worthy winners.
It would take a ridiculous set of results to see Bolton relegated next week as their goal difference is far better than Reading and Fulham who can now only match them on points.
