Oscar De La Hoya was simply too good for Steve Forbes and won a unanimous decision in a 12-round non-title bout in Los Angeles.

It was the former WBC super welterweight champion's first bout since losing to Floyd Mayweather on a split decision a year ago but he outclassed his opponent to take a decisive win on the cards, 119-109, 199-109 and 120-108.

The 35-year-old has now improved his record to 39-5 with 30 knockouts and sets up a rematch with Mayweather on September 20.

"I never looked past Steve Forbes," the Golden Boy said.

"Obviously I was hoping for this outcome. I knew it was going to be a tough fight but I wanted to work on some things. I am going to fight 12 hard rounds come September.

"It is personal and I am going to beat him (Mayweather). It's all about having the perfect game plan."
