Ireland's Peter Lawrie secured the Spanish Open title after a play-off win over Ignacio Garrido at the second extra hole.

The Dubliner made a strong finish to his final round with four birdies over the last six holes to put himself in sight of the victory, but Spain's Garrido forced a play-off with a dramatic 30-yard birdie at the last to force extra holes.

Both then birdied the first of those with Lawrie making a 25-yard putt but Garrido, whose father won the same title in 1972, then saw his approach to the same green spin back into the water.

Lawrie has now completed three successive wins for Ireland on the European Tour after Damien McGrane took the China Open and Darren Clarke won the Asian Open.

"It's nice to keep it in the Irish contingent," he said. "It spurs you on - you play practice rounds with them and think 'why can't I do it'?

"I'm not a party person, but I will enjoy this."

The result will be a big disappointment to Garrido, who has finished runner-up three times in this event, as he held a seven-shot lead on Friday and began the final day three clear.
