Andy Murray admits playing Rafael Nadal on clay would be a learning experience with nobody expecting him to win.
Murray could play the world number two in the quarter-finals of the Rome Masters, if he first gets past qualifier Juan Martin del Potro in round one later on Monday evening.
Waiting in round two will be either Marat Safin or Stanislas Wawrinka, and so Murray will have his work cut out to get a shot at the Spaniard, who appears almost unbeatable on clay at present.
And if the British number one did manage to reach the last eight, then he would certainly try to take something from the encounter, whatever the eventual score.
"You go into a match against him on clay with nobody expecting you to win," he said. "You just try to play your best game and you try to learn.
"I've practised with him on clay but I've never played a match against him on the surface, so it would be a great chance."
Murray won two matches on clay at Monte Carlo but was dumped out in the first round of the Open Sabadell Atlantico in Barcelona by Mario Ancic.
