Nigel Pearson is waiting to find out if he still has a job but says it is crucial that Southampton build for the future.

Saints clinched safety after defeating Sheffield United 3-2 on Sunday but Pearson may still be ousted if and when Rupert Lowe and Michael Wilde return to the club.

Pearson's future is up in the air but he still says it is crucial Saints build for the future and avoid a repeat of this season.

"All in all I'm delighted, but I'm not going to kid myself because it's a situation we'd rather not be in as a club," Pearson revealed. "If you'd have looked the start of the year you wouldn't have said it would be an achievement to stay up. That needs to be addressed, because it is now.

"When the dust settles after the game we have to look at how we move the club forward.

"The most difficult thing about the whole situation was going into the start of the day with it out of our hands, in that we were relying on others to slip up.

"We had to get a win first and it proved to be very difficult, but we have come away with the right result."
