British number one Andy Murray has been dumped out of the Rome Masters by Stanislas Wawrinka in the second round.
The 20-year-old Scot struggled to get going in the first set, in which he called for the trainer, and although he made a better fist of things in the second, he eventually went down in straight sets, 6-2 7-6 (7-5).
With the year's second Grand Slam looming, this result will be a big concern to Murray as he struggled with his serve throughout.
He was broken twice in the first set and, after securing a break of his own at the start of the second, he again lost his serve to surrender the advantage before losing in the tie-break.
However, at least he played down the injury concern and insisted that he not suffered a groin problem.
"I didn't feel that great first set, my legs were a bit heavy, but after that it was fine," he said. "I didn't feel that great, that's all.
"I saw the physio and the doctor and just got some hot cream. The doctor gave me a vitamin tablet or something - I don't know exactly what it was - and, yeah, I felt fine."
Wawrinka will now face Juan Carlos Ferrero, who pulled off a bigger surprise by ousting three-time defending champion Rafael Nadal, 7-5 6-1.
It was only the second time Nadal has been beaten on clay in three years, although he too twice called for the trainer with an apparent foot problem.
