Silvio Berlusconi has stepped down as AC Milan president while the club have denied making a swoop for Roma defender Philippe Mexes.

Berlusconi was forced to relinquish his role as the Rossoneri's president after being appointed Italian prime minister for the third time.

Italian law forbids Berlusconi from running a football club and being in charge of the country's premiership at the same time, but the 71-year-old will still retain ownership.

Vice-president Adriano Galliani has now been handed control of the club and his first job has been to rubbish reports claiming Milan have approached Roma defender Mexes about a switch to the San Siro.

"We have a good relationship with the Sensi family and thus Milan would never break that by approaching one of their players whilst he is still under contract," he said.

"We have never contacted Mexes and we will only make an approach once Roma has put a player on the market."
