Serena Williams is out of the German Open after a three-set defeat to in-form Russian Dinara Safina.

The American took the first set with ease before the Moscow-born star fought back to win the second for the loss of just one game and then claimed the match in the decider on a tie-break.

Safina, younger sister of men's star Marat Safin, had already knocked world number one Justine Henin out of the tournament and she continued her good form with a 2-6 6-1 7-6 (7-5) success on Friday.

Safina will now play Victoria Azarenka in the semi-final after the Belarusian teenager's victory over 15th seed Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine 7-6 (7-2) 6-2, and in the other last-eight matches Elena Dementieva plays Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic takes on Agnes Szavay.
