Barry saga continues

A VillaGareth Barry's proposed move to Arsenal or Liverpool could be scuppered by Aston Villa's upcoming UEFA Cup tie.

Villa have been paired with Icelandic side Hafnarfjordur, with the first leg of the UEFA Cup second qualifying round to be played on August 14.

If Barry plays in either leg he will be cup-tied for the group stages of the Champions League which could put an end to interest from the Gunners and the Reds.

One of the longest-running transfer sagas of the summer looked to be over when Villa manager Martin O'Neill insisted the player was going nowhere when Liverpool failed to make an acceptable bid by the deadline set by Villa.

However, it appears Barry is still keen to move on but may be forced to stay should he be included in the team to play Hafnarfjordur.

Arsenal are known to be interested but as yet manager Arsene Wenger has not made a bid for the England international while Liverpool claim they still need to sell in order to buy.

If neither club can manage to prise Barry away from Villa before August 14 it looks as if the midfielder will remain at Villa Park.
