Boss defends Benteke decision

Paul Lambert has defended his decision to start with Christian Benteke on the bench against Tottenham on Sunday.

Benteke is fit again after almost a month out with a hip problem and could be back in the manager's starting plans for the visit of Everton on Saturday.

But Lambert said it was the right call to reintroduce Benteke as a substitute given his lack time on the training field.

"Christian had only trained for three or four days in a month," said Lambert.

"It's just not enough to put him into that scale of a game and we didn't want to re-injure him or anything like that.

"It was the right thing to bring him on and he might have scored on another day but his contribution was OK."
