Ciaran Clark is set to pip Aston Villa new boy Jores Okore to start in place of the injured Nathan Baker at Chelsea on Wednesday.
Centre-back, Baker, was forced off during Villa's 3-1 opening-day win at Arsenal on Saturday and was replaced by Clark, who should start in his place at Stamford Bridge after he impressed boss Paul Lambert at the Emirates Stadium.
Okore, who arrived in a £4million deal from Danish club Nordsjaelland this summer, is another possibility but it seems Lambert will stick with Clark alongside Ron Vlaar against Jose Mourinho's side with Baker facing a week out with a twisted ankle.
"It was something we never really had last year and the competition is important for everybody," said Lambert.
"I thought Ciaran did great for us, coming into a game of that magnitude for Nathan.
"I am delighted with Ciaran and the way he played."
Lambert is boosted by the availability of Yacouba Sylla who is back in training after injuring his ankle while playing for the Under-21s against West Ham just over a week ago, but midfielder Chris Herd is still not quite ready to return to action because of a calf problem.
