Veteran Shay Given will be allowed to go out on loan next season, with Celtic hoping to re-sign the former Republic of Ireland keeper.
The 37-year-old was demoted to second-choice at Villa Park last season, with US star Brad Guzan impressing between the sticks for Paul Lambert's side.
Given's future now looks ever more uncertain and Lambert is happy to let the former Newcastle number one leave this summer, either on loan or on a permanent basis if the right deal emerges.
Given began his career at Celtic before being freed as a teenager and would relish a return to the Glasgow giants in the twilight of his career.
The Ireland legend, who has played over 600 club games for Blackburn, Swindon, Sunderland, Newcastle, Manchester City and Villa, is also a summer target for recently-promoted Hull City but a switch back to Celtic Park appears his most likely destination.
