Gardner pen four-year deal

A VillaAston Villa midfielder Craig Gardner has paid tribute to manager Martin O'Neill after signing a new four-year deal at the club.

The life long Villa fan praised O'Neill for rewarding his loyalty after agreeing to remain with the club until 2012 as he becomes the latest in a long line of players who have extended their deals, including Stiliyan Petrov and Gabby Agbonlahor.

"I was thrilled to get the offer of this new deal and, to be fair, the manager has really looked after me," Gardner told the Birmingham Mail.

"I've been at Aston Villa since I was a youngster and I'm thrilled to be securing my future with the club.

"It is great to secure this deal now and it means I can just get my head down and focus on my game."
