Alan Hutton claims he had to believe in his own ability to play for loan club Mallorca having been 'wasting away' at Aston Villa.
The 28-year-old Scotland international full-back has endured a miserable spell with Villa this season, with manager Paul Lambert leaving him out of his plans.
As a result Hutton followed up a loan stint at Nottingham Forest earlier in the campaign with a move to join Spanish Primera Division relegation strugglers Real Mallorca until the end of the season.
And he has enjoyed being back out on the playing field on a regular basis, including in a recent game against Real Madrid.
He told the Birmingham Mail: "When I got the chance to move to Spain I had to back my own ability. You need the confidence to say, 'I am good enough, I can play'.
"To go from doing nothing at Aston Villa, feeling as if I was wasting away, then to be playing against Real Madrid the next minute, it definitely makes it that bit more special."
