Midfielder Stephen Ireland is set to join Shay Given in leaving Aston Villa for Championship side Doncaster.
Veteran goalkeeper Given has been frozen out of Villa's pre-season preparations and has reportedly already agreed a season-long loan move to the Keepmoat Stadium.
Rovers boss Paul Dickov is hopeful the club will receive a cash injection after talks with investors made positive progress on Thursday.
Dickov will seek to spend some of that cash on Ireland, who is certain to leave Villa Park this summer.
The 26-year-old, who made just 10 Premier League appearances last term, has also been left out of Villa's pre-season plans.
He has struggled to reach his best form since signing from Manchester City in 2010 and Lambert is ready to cut his losses on the Republic of Ireland midfielder.
