Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis is the man boss Paul Lambert wants to replace Christian Benteke at Aston Villa, according to reports.
Lambert is not wasting any time in checking for potential targets following the decision of 22-year-old Benteke to hand in a transfer request at Villa Park following a successful season at the club in which he scored 23 goals.
Tottenham remain the favourites to sign the Belgium international but they have yet to submit a formal bid as Villa want £25million for the man they paid Genk £7million for 12 months ago.
However Lambert appears to have given up the ghost on keeping Benteke on board and is directing his attentions on 27-year-old French international forward Gomis, who bagged 20 goals in 40 appearances for Lyon last term.
Gomis has been labelled 'The Baby Drogba' due to his similar style and stature to former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba so he would certainly fill the physical void that will be created by Benteke's exit.
Lyon could be willing to sell the player for £7 million as he has entered the final year of his contract at the Ligue 1 side, although an obstacle would potentially be Gomis not wanting to join a club with no Champions League football on offer next season.
