Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni has ruled Villa defender Richard Dunne out of the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Dunne has not played this season as he struggles to overcome a groin problem and Trapattoni admits he must do without him for the double-header against Sweden and Austria later this month.

The 33-year-old appeared to be on track for the Sweden game when he returned to Villa training in January, but the ex-Manchester City and Everton centre back broke down again.

Villa boss Paul Lambert recently cast doubt on whether the veteran will play again this season.
