Aston Villa striker Darren Bent is believed to be wary of joining Newcastle because of the uncertainty surrounding Alan Pardew.
Bent has been told he is free to leave Villa Park this summer and Newcastle, along with Hull City, are said to be keen on securing the services of the former England international.
A move to St James' Park would be the striker's preferred choice but reports claim Bent is concerned that boss Pardew may leave the club at some point following the arrival of Joe Kinnear.
Bent would therefore want assurances over the future of Pardew before committing to a move that would cost the Magpies in the region of £6million.
Villa say they have yet to receive any bids for the player but that is likely to change over the next few weeks as everyone starts to return to work ahead of the new campaign.
