QPR's reported interest in Cardiff defender Steven Caulker is likely to boost Aston Villa's hopes of keeping skipper Ron Vlaar.
As we reported earlier in the week 29-year-old Vlaar, who has started all three of Holland's World Cup games to date, has been eyed by R's boss Harry Redknapp as he looks to bolster his defence for the Londoners' return to the Premier League.
The former Feyenoord man has impressed in his two seasons with Villa and it seemed that the club were bracing themselves for a bid from QPR.
Villa chief Paul Lambert will not want to lose such an influential player, but with the uncertainty surrounding the club as current owner Randy Lerner looks to sell, it might have been difficult to keep him on board.
However it seems Redknapp is switching his sights to 22-year-old Caulker who has a release clause in his Bluebirds contract allowing him to move on after they were relegated at the end of last season.
Liverpool, Everton, Newcastle and former club Spurs were all thought to be interested but now the R's have emerged as frontrunners to land him as they look to link him up with veteran Rio Ferdinand, who is signing on a Bosman free transfer after leaving Manchester United this summer.
