Aston Villa scouts reportedly watched Sochaux winger Ryad Boudebouz in action on Saturday as the club weighs up a possible swoop.
Villa boss Paul Lambert has not ruled out making further additions at Villa Park before the transfer window closes on September 2, despite already drafting in six new signings so far this summer.
There are several players, including record signing Darren Bent, that the Scot is looking to offload to make space for more acquisitions. However, it appears that Lambert is lining up players to come in as soon as the funds become available to him.
The former Norwich manager recently denied making a move to sign Nurnberg's Japanese midfielder Hiroshi Kiyotake, but it seems he is keeping tabs on Boudebouz.
The France-born 23-year-old Algeria international, who played in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and in the African Nations Cup earlier this year, was thought to be the player Villa scouts were watching during Sochaux's 1-1 draw against Evian at the weekend.
