Young staying put

Luke Young has turned down the chance to join Liverpool and has instead opted to stay at Aston Villa for the foreseeable future.

The Reds are desperate to bring in some defensive reinforcements, especially at left-back, following the sale of Emiliano Insua to Fiorentina and the exit of Fabio Aureilo.

Hodgson had seen Young as a decent makeweight to come in and fill the void, with the two club's reportedly agreeing a fee and Villa allowing him to say at home to discuss a deal rather than join the rest of the squad in Portugal.

However, Young's representatives and Liverpool failed to come to terms on an agreement and Hodgson will now turn his attentions elsewhere with Manchester City's Wayne Bridge and Wigan's Maynor Figueroa potential candidates.
