Blades chief cuts out Howard talk

BarnsleySheffield United boss Kevin Blackwell has ruled himself out of the running for Barnsley skipper Brian Howard this summer.

The Blades are just one of a myriad of clubs to be linked with a raid on the Tykes for the influential midfielder in the close-season transfer window.

However Blackwell says he is not interested in the 25-year-old and will not be making an attempt to take Howard to Bramall Lane from Oakwell.

Barnsley boss Simon Davey had already scoffed at talk their South Yorkshire rivals were set to make a bid for Howard last week.

He told the Sheffield Star: "We keep hearing in the press that clubs are interested.

"The latest is Sheffield United. I know Kevin Blackwell very well and he knows he would only have to pick up the phone if he was interested.

"I can honestly say, hand on heart, that there has been no contact regarding Brian. If a bid comes in that is not to our valuation he will not be sold."
