He was also pleased to see new recruit and veteran centre-back Darren Moore play 90 minutes.
"We also got Jamal Campbell-Ryce and Martin Devaney on the pitch, which was pleasing," he said.
"You don't like to lose, even in friendlies, but it is about peaking at the right time not a fortnight before.
"Fitness wise, we need a little bit more and we've a lot of work to do in the next two weeks. The Wigan game (tomorrow), provides us with a step up and that's just what's needed right now."
